1 〔老いること〕 growing old; old age.

●王様にも老いが忍び寄りつつあった. Old age was creeping up on the king as well.

老いの悲しみ the sorrow of growing old; the sorrows of old age

・娘が老いの身を案じてときどき電話をしてくる. Concerned about me in my old age, my daughter telephones me from time to time.

老いを送る spend the waning years of one's life 《in [at]…》

・父は定年になって故郷へ帰り, 老いを養っています. My father went back to his hometown after retirement, where he's spending his old age in leisurely fashion.

・わが身の老いを受け入れざるをえない時がきっと来る. There comes a time when one has to accept (the fact of) one's growing old.

・あの俳優の声はまったく老いを感じさせない. That actor's voice doesn't sound at all like the voice of an old person.

2 〔老人〕 the aged; the elderly; the old; those (well) on in their years; old folk.

●老いも若きも both young and old [old and young] (alike).

老いの一徹 the dogged persistency of the aged [old]; the stubbornness of the elderly [those on in their years]

・父は老いの一徹で, 絶対言を曲げない. My father has the stubbornness common to old folk; he won't change what he says for anything.

・老いの繰り言 the repetitious harping of the elderly

・息子は老いの繰り言だと言って, 私の話に耳も貸してくれない. My son won't listen to me when I talk; he calls it my “senile harping.”
